INTERNSHIP

KENTUCKY RURAL-URBAN EXCHANGE

During the summer and fall of 2017, I interned with the Kentucky Rural-Urban Exchange (RUX).

RUX is a statewide program that brings rural and urban people from all over Kentucky together in unique community settings over three, weekend-long intensives each summer as a way to explore commonalities, deepen connections to people and places, and collaborate towards place-based innovation.

BOWLING GREEN COMMUNITY INTENSIVE

The primary component of my internship was planning the Bowling Green Community Intensive.  I curated a weekend-long experience for RUX participants that reflected the culture, history, landscape, and identity of South Central Kentucky from multiple perspectives.  I organized a variety of cultural programs that allowed community members to share their stories with RUX members.  I also handled the logistical considerations of the Community Intensive by securing lodging, serving as the liaison for sites and partners, attracting local sponsorship, and managing a host committee.

The schedule I developed for the Bowling Green Community Intensive is now the model used to help guide new regional host coordinators.

MEDIA CREATION

The secondary part of my internship involved documenting the three 2017 Community Intensives and developing media pieces (photo essays and short films) for RUX, which share stories from the people, communities, and places RUX members interacted with during the weekends.

I created two short films featuring RUX participants sharing about their experience with the program, as well as a number of reflections and photo essays which are featured on the RUX blog.
