Folk Arts Education VISTA
Hindman Settlement School
Spring 2018 - Present, Hindman, KY

  • Identified and developed roadmap for creating Folk Arts Education curricula for Knott County teachers’ use 

  • Researched important historical and cultural figures of Knott County to integrate into lesson plans

  • Located and secured access to archival resources for use in place-based curricula development

Graduate Assistant,
Kentucky Folklife Program

Fall 2016 - Summer 2018, Bowling Green, KY

 

  • Co-wrote text using oral history interviews for NEA-funded museum exhibit, developed digital version of the exhibit with expanded audio and visual content, and conducted ethnographic research for exhibit

  • Generated idea and set timeline for developing a statewide folklife network and digital magazine, both of which will play an integral role helping KFP engage cultural workers from around the state

  • Successfully obtained several grants, including one from the NEA and one from the Kentucky Oral History Commission

  • Coordinated, marketed, and produced regular public programming about Kentucky’s folklife

  • Created unique content for social media with measurable success in increasing audience and engagement

  • Co-taught “Dress to Express,” a course for high school students focusing on how dress and adornment are modes of self-expression, as well as markers of personal and group identity

  • Developed newsletters and press releases that supported KFP’s marketing and communications plan

  • Documented RUX weekends, and developed and edited photo essays and short, interview-based films

  • Coordinated two weekend-long Community Intensives in Southcentral Kentucky for 70 RUX members

  • Identified regional experiences which were accessible and that reflected the culture, history, landscape, and identity of Southcentral Kentucky from multiple perspectives

  • Recruited and managed a host committee and secured regional sponsorship

  • Developed logistical considerations by identifying, securing, and serving as a liaison for sites, venues, and partners for the           Community Intensive

  • Leveraged social media, press releases, and newsletters to recruit applicants

“Bowling Green Bosnia Oral History Project,” served as a research assistant for an ethnographic study for the Kentucky Folklife Program, conducting and transcribing interviews, Fall 2016 – Summer 2018

“Eastern Kentucky Social Club Material Culture Documentation,” researched and documented the material culture of the Lynch chapter of the EKSC, Spring 2018

“Hair in Horse Cave Documentation Project,” served as co-director for the production of a film that documents the network of hairdressers in Horse Cave, Kentucky’s African American community, Fall 2017

“Foodways in South Central Kentucky: Exploring International Grocery Stores as Spaces for Cultivating Identity and Community,” served as Principal Investigator (PI) for IRB-approved ethnographic study in which I produced a a short film (Not Just a Grocery Store) based on oral history interviews I conducted with owners of Jasmine Grocery Store in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Spring 2017

“National Register of Historic Places,” completed a traditional cultural property nomination involving an unusually decorated cemetery. Involved onsite survey, archival, and oral history research, Fall 2016

“Musical Ties: The Role of Community in the Chillicothe, Ohio Music Scene,” conducted interviews with people involved in the diverse musical scene of Chillicothe, Ohio, and photographically documented several music-related events in the area, Fall 2009 – Spring 2010
